Canine parvovirus (CPV)

CPV is a highly contagious viral disease of dogs that commonly causes acute gastrointestinal illness in puppies. The disease most often strikes in pups between six and 20 weeks old, but older animals are sometimes also affected. A rare variant of the disease that may be seen in very young (neonatal) puppies is myocarditis (an inflammation of the heart muscle).

CDV is highly contagious and commonly travels between hosts through the aerosols emitted when dogs bark and cough and through urine and feces. The disease starts with respiratory symptoms, such as coughing and pneumonia, and progresses into gastrointestinal illness and neurological problems. Most dogs in the United States receive vaccines for CDV to protect against native North American strains.

How to maintain good health condition for your pets

Well, it is relatively easy to keep your pet at good health status as long as following the 7 points below which is adapted from the American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) website.

  2. Exercise your pet.
  3. Feed your pet a balanced, nutritious diet.
  4. Have your veterinarian examine your pet at least once a year to make sure your pet is healthy and to help detect problems earlier.
  5. Vaccinate your pet against potentially deadly diseases such as distemper, parvo, panleukopenia and rabies.
  6. Keep your pet free of parasites (fleas and ticks, heartworm, etc.) – consult your veterinarian for the best product for your pet.
  7. Spay or neuter your pet.
